Cascade Bloom Quilt Review: My Quilting Journey

One of my favorite local quilt pattern designers is Taylor at Toad & Sew. Her patterns inspired me to take the plunge into my quilting journey. When I saw Toad & Sew’s recent pattern “Cascade Bloom” I knew instantly that I wanted to make this quilt!

Cascade Bloom is the first pattern where I tried curved piecing. Curves can be intimidating for the first few, but after a few practice blocks, they are no sweat! Remember to snip notches into small curves a little larger than 1/8″, pin, and sew s-l-o-w.

The king size version of this quilt required 68 curved blocks! Organize your pieces into a factory process, chain piece, and the blocks sew together quickly!

The block units are 9 patch blocks created from strips pieced, cut, rearranged, and sewn back together. So fast!

Then pair with curved blocks and done! Gorgeous!

I wanted extra room on the quilt. It would be used on a California King size bed. So, I added a 5 inch border around the sides and bottom. The finished size is now 104″ across!

A sneak peak at the quilting design. Just at the beginning, so much more to come. I wanted to keep the quilting design modern. Planning 50 wt King Tut thread with ruler work in the curves and grid blocks. Then juxtaposition the ruler work with 80 wt Decobob thread free motion quilting in the tan background. So thrilled to be playing on this amazing canvas!
