Classic heirloom feathers on a traditional log cabin quilt, but with a modern twist.

I have been wanting to make a quilt out of Ruby Star Society’s Firefly collection since it was first released. I love the bright colors, moths, mushrooms and flowers in the prints. So when I saw jelly rolls of Firefly I purchased a couple of them well before I had a plan on which quilt pattern to use.
I wanted to mix Firefly with some solids to show off free motion quilting, log cabin blocks are quick to put together and so versatile! I love the look of white quilts with feathers and swirls, but in a house full of kids and pets white quilts do not stay white for very long. I purchased a couple of Kona cotton graphite solid jelly rolls to experiment how gray on gray would hold up. This quilt was fast to put together. With the Jelly rolls already 2 1/2 inches wide, all I needed to do was to cut length and chain stitch. The blocks went together in less than a day, but I had to play around with the blocks on my design wall to decide on the layout.

The solid portions of the log cabin created a fantastic canvas for free motion quilting. I love Bethanne Nemesh’s Lily Lines Rulers to set the feather spines, especially when working on feathered hearts. Once spines are set, then the free motion feather play happens. I like to add pebbles, leaves, swirls, and the occassional sand dollar to fill the space between feathers. .
